With its distinctive ‘pop art’ livery, the Flower Power Mustang was released in 1968, based on the Corgi 325 Ford Mustang ‘Fastback’ tooling from 1965. Labelled on the box as a ‘stock racing car’, Corgi 348 featured the earlier model’s opening doors, tilting seats and jewelled headlights but was given an updated livery very much in the spirit of the age!
Unusually, the model didn’t appear in a Corgi Toys catalogue and only appeared on shop order forms until January 1969. The lack of promotion didn’t help sales and it was rather hastily deleted from the range by the end of that year. Corgi 348 sold in numbers of just over 50,000 in the UK, selling a reported 160,000+ elsewhere. Most purchases, perhaps unsurprisingly, were in the USA. Today, original examples are rare and much sought after – especially when accompanied by its attractive illustrated box.
