155 - Lotus - Climax Formula 1 Racing Car

$39.99

Nothing typifies mid-to-late 1960s Corgis like this wonderful Lotus-Climax racing car. It was a must-have for schoolboys of the era, introduced in December 1964, just in time for Christmas. Based on Colin Chapman’s streamlined design that first raced in 1962 and was famously driven by Jim Clark, this superb Corgi is painted in a classic ‘British racing green’ livery, with a yellow racing stripe and that all important number one decal.

Strangely, the box illustration showed the car with a number four. Best of all, it came with a miniature driver, perfect for holding your own Grand Prix on the living room carpet! It was deleted in 1975, by which time racing cars looked very different indeed.

Just like I remember

Like many kids of my generation, during the 60's Corgi die-cast cars were one of the ultimate toys. Back then I would carefully save my .50 cent/week allowance to accumulate the $3.50 cost of a new Corgi car or truck for my collection. This Lotus Climax F1 racer was in my stable and this re-issue looks exactly as I remember. At first it appeared to be a bit smaller in scale but comparing the driver figure with my original Batmobile and 007 Aston Martin DB-5 figures it is obvious they're the same size. Most of my Corgi's were gifted to a friend's younger brother when I outgrew (or so I thought) but these toys are really timeless classics and I'm happy to see them back again.

Much better than Matchbox version

I was given a large collection of old Matchbox cars when I was a kid.
In that collection was the Matchbox version of the Lotus-Climax race car. Needless to say, there is no comparison between this Corgi version and Matchbox Lotus. The Corgi has much better detail, better paint, and is LARGER. Another perfect reproduction by the Corgi Club.
