Introduced into the Corgi range June 1962 – with a new yellow interior, an added driver figure, plus Corgi’s famed ‘Glidamatic’ suspension – this finely modelled Ford Thunderbird die-cast model superceded an earlier version, Corgi 215, which had been released two years earlier, in 1959. Despite being given a new red finish, the box artwork stayed the same, depicting the earlier model’s white exterior. Given the catalogue number, 215S – the added 'S' representing the new model's suspension – this gleaming red Thunderbird was made by Corgi until 1965.
There was one further subtle difference between the two models. The rear numberplate on the original white version read 1959 – to denote the year of the Thunderbird car it was based on – whereas on the new red model it was left blank.
