303S - Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Open Roadster

$42.99

The ‘S’ on the 303S Corgi catalogue number denotes a model with miniature working suspension dating from between 1961 and 1963. It was initially released by Corgi in 1958 (as 303), minus this feature. In 1963 it was graced with a driver figure – as is the case with this Corgi Model Club version.

Finally, in 1964, some examples featured spoked wheels. Interestingly, the ‘S’ prefix was dropped between 1964 and 1965 for models with and without the spoked wheels. During its production life the model was produced in white, off-white, various shades of blue and in a plated metal finish. The interior was either blue, yellow or brown. This 303S replicates the classic variant with a striking bonnet racing stripe.

Beautiful little Benz

I love this convertible SL - the color is great and the driver is a nice addition. My only criticism is that I don’t really care for the stripes and number. I think this model would present better as a swanky civilian sports car, rather than a race car. Outside of that, it’s a fabulous model.

Three more models

The Mercedes 300 SL arrived last week, along with two other club models (Porsche and Surfer Mini). So, how does it stack up? It doesn't have any opening features, and the interior is...yellow. This is keeping true to the original, which is exactly how I suspect most of us want them. In my opinion, we are better off with an SL with bright blue paint, red racing stripes and that yellow interior. It's an optimistic scheme commanding us to roll it around at speed. That's what I did, anyways.
Like all the other models from the club, this release is accurate enough to look right at home with the other vintage Corgis on your shelf, and is clearly the work of people who understand how to get it right. Bravo, folks. Keep them coming.
