When introduced by Corgi in October 1962 this striking American ambulance featured an infamously erratic mechanism on the model’s rear axle to switch the rooftop bulb on and off, thus simulating a flashing emergency light. It was one of the few Corgi innovations of the era that failed to live up to expectations and was eventually replaced in 1966 by a simpler battery operated circuit that powered a flashing bulb*.

This Corgi Model Club edition marries the red and cream livery of the earlier model with the circuitry of the later variant. Both were given Corgi’s patented ‘Trans-O-Lite’ system whereby light from the bulb illuminated the model’s front and rear roof lights. Corgi sold over one million of the red liveried version of Corgi 437.

*Sadly these specialist bulbs, which incorporate a bi-metal strip to make it flash on and off, are sadly no longer available in the size needed.

New Superior Ambulance Colors

This is the color I had hoped would be released instead of the blue one, so I'm very glad to see this model. I bought the other version and I like it, but this is the one I had as a boy (and still have). It's also much more like the colors used on most American mbulances in the 1960s. The quality of the paint and window decals is first rate, probably better than the original. Since the light doesn't flash, I would have preferred to se the large hole covered and a more in-scale, non-working light used, but then the whole body casting would have to change since it's one piece, and of course it wouldn't look like the original toy. The red ambulance and the blue one look very nice together.

Top Notch Customer Service

Got my original order (bought 2) popped a couple batteries in. 1 gave me no problem. The other would not light. Swapped light bulbs...nothing. Got to the point the bulb would not stay in. Contacted Customer service and had a replacement in my hands over a week later. These folks do take care of the Customer. Haven't had any bad experiences and is refreshing to know my membership is in reliable hands. Thank you!
